North East Chapter – Irish Woodturners Guild

July 2012 BBQ

Seamus and Mary Cassidy had done Trojan work cleaning out the workshop to facilitate their daughter Niamh’s 21st birthday party, which was due to start after our motley crew of turners managed to dust up the place again. Also, outside the workshop a marquee was erected which Des Harbourne from The Hut commandeered to display an array of eye-catching woodturning goods.

This was our ‘hands on’ day with five lathes available for members to hone their skills under the watchful eyes and guidance of Robert O’Connor and Seamus Cassidy. Bowls, goblets, pens, eggcups, boxes, spheres were the order of the day.

It was also our BBQ day and special thanks to the head chefs Seamus Cassidy and Peter Donagh for preparing the grub, and thanks to The Man Above for switching on the sun for the occasion.  We were also treated to a feast of traditional music from James Halligan on the guitar and Michael Clarke on the button accordion.

After the leisurely meal and entertainment it was back to work stations with Seamus demonstrating how to turn the perfect sphere, and Robert turning a mini lidded box.

Both items were attempted to be replicated by the members during the course of the afternoon with varying degrees of success.  A pleasant day was shared by all – thanks to all involved.
